Use of Time Resolved X-Ray Radiography to Measure Interdiffusion in Liquid Metals
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Introduction Chemical diffusion (also named interdiffusion), originating from the fluctuations among different elements, is a common phenomenon in multicomponent liquid metals. The interdiffusion coefficients in liquid alloys control the liquid-solid transformation and are thus basic parameters for materials design from the melt. In this work, a novel X-ray radiography (XRR) technique (Fig.1) is developed to in situ measure interdiffusion in liquid alloys[1, 2]. With this in-situ method, we can accurately measure liquid diffusion coefficients directly in the liquid state without knowing the absolute diffusion time and without considering the solidification effect [2]. Particularly, XRR can also allow us to check for the buoyancy-driven convention effect in the liquid diffusion process. With this method, reliable interdiffusion data in Al-Cu and Al-Ni melts have been measured systematically [2, 3].

متن کاملQuantitative time-averaged gas and liquid distributions using x-ray fluorescence and radiography in atomizing sprays.
A method for quantitative measurements of gas and liquid distributions is demonstrated using simultaneous x-ray fluorescence and radiography of both phases in an atomizing coaxial spray. Synchrotron radiation at 10.1 keV from the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory is used for x-ray fluorescence of argon gas and two tracer elements seeded into the liquid stream. Simultaneous t...
متن کاملRelation between self diffusion and interdiffusion in Al-Cu melts
We compare the experimental interdiffusion constants DAlCu in liquid Al81.3Cu18.7 at% to the experimental Cu self diffusion constants DCu in a similar Al80Cu20 at% melt. DAlCu are measured by an X-ray radiography technique and DCu are measured by the quasielastic neutron scattering method. It was found that DAlCu is enhanced by a factor of 3 with respect to DCu. The relation between DAlCu and D...

Background and purpose: Increasing number of patients undergoing x-ray examinations has created a global concern due to the deleterious biological effects associated with x-ray exposure. Adherence to ionizing radiation protection principles could be of great benefit in decreasing these effects. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to survey radiation protection in diagnostic x-ray imaging in ...
